Thurman's Sawmill 1989 - In the mid -1980s I spent three summers and a fall working at Danny and Jim Thurman's sawmill in the township of Oswegatchie. The mill made pallets for the Gouverneur talc mines. Using locally sourced timber and then timber from Canada, the mill operated a ten hour shift Monday through Thursday. The crew that worked there were, for the most part, hometown friends of mine. I found the job at the mill exciting as I enjoyed being part of the production work that could only be accomplished through teamwork. The owners kept the mill operating until the talc mines closed in the 90s. (Images are reduced resolution 120mm negative and Kodachrome slide film scans )
